SWEATY
PALMS AND ARMPIT SURGERY
Introduction
Sweaty
palms is a common condition especially amongst the Chinese where
research has shown that about 7% of the population is affected.
A genetic factor is involved since 20% of patients have another
family member affected.
Various methods of treatment
Permanent treatment
| |
- Peripheral Nerve Surgery: Endoscopic
Sympathectomy
The surgery makes use of a miniature video camera and requires only
a small nick in each armpit.
The actual operative time per side is only about 10 to 15
minutes in most cases, though the total procedure for both sides
takes about 1 1/2hours. Post-operative
pain and scars are minimal and hospitalization is reduced to one
day without the need for intensive care.
This same procedure can be used for face and
armpits. Local research
has shown that the feet also dry up in 50% of patients and the procedure
is safe if done by an experience surgeon.
In some patients, they experience a bit more sweating on
the chest, abdomen or back, which does not bother them very much.

Temporary treatment :
| |
- Medication (applied to the
palms or armpits)
- Iontophoresis (small currents are passed through to temporary
deactivate the sweat glands)
- Botulinium (an injection of nerve poison to the palms)
Many people do not respond
well to some of the applied medication because of skin irritation.
Additionally, the effects of these treatments are only temporary,
and the procedure may need to be repeated weekly/monthly or sometimes-even
sooner. It can only be an expensive treatment method to be consider
for a lifetime.
